Collection: Hawaiian Pukalani Collection

Filigree work has appeared in more intricate and elaborate jewelry for centuries, and it seemed only natural for jewelry historian Philip Rickard to adopt this technique and apply it to traditional Hawaiian Jewelry. "Filigree work is known for distinctive openings that have an almost celestial element. This reminded me of the Hawaiian word puka meaning opening and lani meaning heavenly," says Rickard.

"In our workshop, master craftsmen hand carve these filigree designs. The flowers, scrolls, and leaves wind their way around these openings, creating a natural openwork that is both very distinctive and very beautiful. This work is much more detailed than the solid design, and really shows off the craftsmen's superb talents. The look is fresh and dif-ferent, yet still completely Hawaiian Jewelry."
